2023 MEETING MINUTES
Dudley Pond Association Spring Meeting
April 30, 2023
Wayland Senior Center
Board members present: Tim Dreher, Eric Macklin, Lisa Jacobs, Jamie Pierce, Naomi Deutscher, Margo Melnicove,
Dinner was served and the meeting was called to order at 5:25pm. This meeting was held at the senior center and also via Zoom. Newcomers Roy Rotenberg, Noa Berlin, Scott Sweeney and Trish Gedarovich introduced themselves.
Boat Graveyard
Tim described the boats that are targeted and the process by which they will either be removed or tagged as staying because the owner has claimed it. A lengthier discussion is needed to figure out a longer term solution for parking and identifying boats.
Wayland Clean-up
Scott Sweeney coordinated this Earth Day event with energize Wayland. He set up shop at Mansion Beach and had supplies, food & coffee and maps which directed volunteers to clean up locations. We would like to team up with Energize Wayland again next spring.
2023-24 Slate of Officers
Lynne Garone stepped forward to be a member-at-large and Jim Ogletree offered to be the next Treasurer. A motion was made and seconded to approve the new slate of officers:
Pres: Tim Dreher
First VP: Doron Almog
Second VP: Eric Macklin
Treasurer: Jim Ogletree
Secretary: Lisa Jacobs
Members-at-large: Naomi Deutscher, Ann Drouillhet, Lynne Garone, and Margo Melnicove
The motion approving all 2023-24 slate of officers was passed unanimously.
Communications Committee report
Steve Garone introduced the new communications committee members and the projects being undertaken: creating a blog, a calendar, updating the website, taking over the newsletter, and helping Mike Morette to improve our social media presence.
Pain in the Grass Committee
Naomi Deutscher and Margo Melnicove described their efforts to identify the 130+ Dudley Pond abutters, and then reach out to board members and friends to help engage them about ways to keep the pond clean and weed free. Although the amount of floating debris increases after the Harvester circulates the pond, there is an equally great need to be aware of all the other floating debris that is created all year long. Some of these contributors are blowing leaves, fertilizer runoff, what flows through our storm drains, etc. The DPA is looking to purchase rakes and other tools to help the abutters and volunteers. The committee will develop talking points, identify tools and procedures and set up work parties throughout the summer.
Pond Report and Harvester Update
Norm Marowitz, part of Wayland SWQ, described the plan to do another Procellar- treatment in June targeting Eurasian Milfoil. The company, Solitude who has done prior treatments, won the bid. We will put up signs around the pond when treatment is scheduled. Dogs and swimmers will need to wait at least a week because we sandbag the outlet for a few days, keeping the treatment contained.
The Town of Wayland DPW hired both Allison LaClaire and Jim Ogletree as Harvester Operators this summer. Not only is this a great hire, but Allison & Jim have been very familiar with every inch of our pond for many years. We will have access to the Harvester for 8 weeks this summer. Based on the timing of the procellar treatment, and the tapegrass’ progress, early July is the best guess for starting the cutting. Norm warned us that due to a deeper blade this year, there will be more fragments. It will allow us to grab a deeper section of the tapegrass but it will create more floaters. The Pain in the Grass Committee will be working with Norm, Jim & Allison to clean up what the Harvester leaves behind. Identifying dumping areas for the collected tapegrass, and how to turn tapegrass into mulch for abutters will be part of the project.
A question came up about PFA’s being an issue in the Pond. Since PFA’s are mostly measured in town drinking wells, there isn’t much data known about Dudley Pond- altho Norm has declared that our water quality is very clean.
Allison LaClaire gave a presentation on the history of Dudley Pond and how that has affected what the pond is today. The area surrounding the pond was all farmland in the 1800’s. There are now 135 homes around the pond. The DPA was established in the late 60’s. Milfoil was first seen in Dudley Pond around 1992, and it was also found in many other bodies of water at the same time. Milfoil must be knocked down and removed by the root to prevent the seeds from spreading; tapegrass, which is native and grows in milfoils’ absence, must be mowed. Tapegrass also has reseeding capability.
Both Jim and Allison will be operating the Harvester and will need to get a better understanding of the total picture. Removing and composting the harvested tapegrass/milfoil is one of the bigger challenges. How to get rid of it: storing, drying, composting, and finding deposit points and end-users will be studied. They will work with the Pain in the Grass committee to get questions answered, systems developed and a plan going forward. The DPA will invest in rakes and other tools to help with this effort.
Treasurers Report
Jamie reviewed the 2022 financials. aspect of the Fun Run. We received $11,620 in sponsorships of which over 50% came from individuals. Our operating expenses have remained the same. CD rates are increasing. Major expenses this year include a Procellar treatment in June and expenses associated with running the Harvester, and purchasing tools for shoreline weed removal.
Upcoming events
Tim briefly reviewed the 2 recent events: the Winter Social, and the Town Clean-up on Earth Day. Both were successful and well attended. We decided to do both events next year.
Newcomers Potluck- May 21- we will get list of newcomers. Mike Morette has created an invitation. Nomi Deutscher will host again. Lisa will coordinate food. We will invite the board and close friends of Dudley Pond to welcome our newcomers.

Music around the pond- throughout the summer. Several bands have contacted us and want to participate. The Dirty water Jazz Band is interested in returning on our pontoon boats I July. We will need to find a new launch point/staging area.

We are working with the Town to identify and remove invasive species along the beach. Once removed, we can determine the next step and get an idea of which plant species would work. Karen is looking for anyone with an interest in this project. Tom Klem offered to help Karen navigate the Conservation Commission who will need to issue the permits.
A motion was made, seconded and approved unanimously, to adjourn the meeting at 7:10.
Respectfully submitted,

We will provide some activities that don’t involve going on the ice. We will get chairs from Longfellow (Lisa) and a firepit or two from neighbors. We will also have music.
Communications
Steve Garone gave an overview of current communications and where we need to improve. The website had gone down and Steve took over website domain name and hosting responsibilities and got it back online. We will create a community calendar, an editorial board, a blog and revamp the website. Steve will set-up monthly meetings.

They will also include Harvester updates in all their communications. Earth Day is April 25, and the committee wants to get something going by then.
Mansion Beach Restoration
Karen Farhner wants to start the project by the end of March with bi-monthly work parties to start the current removal and identify future plantings. She is currently doing a walkthrough of the area with Lynne Garone and Jennifer Steele to ID what’s there and what should go.
The board will help get this project underway and help find volunteers. Then Karen and her committee will create a separate communication process to identify tasks, supplies, equipment and timelines.
New Treasurer search
Jamie has identified a possible candidate- a former lawyer who has experience with non-profits. He will reach out to this person and present the candidate to the board and then approval at the Spring meeting.

Winter social event- Feb. 11, 2-5pm
Lisa is arranging all the food and beverages and Tim & Eric have offered to help with heating up the hot cocoa and cider. We will send out two more eblast invitations to both the membership/watershed, and Fun Run sponsors and contributors. Lisa reviewed all the logistics including an inclement weather plan.
Communications
Steve has fixed the website so it’s up and running, renewed the domain name, started to create a community calendar, started a discussion about the Spring newsletter and what it will look like, and reviewed his ideas about having a blog, creating an editorial board, and finding ways to beef up our content for better communications. He plans to hold monthly meetings to fine tune all this.
The Board will create the Spring Newsletter this time, (both paper and electronic), and then the communications committee will take over the newsletter process.
Pain in the Grass Committee Report
Margo reported that the committee has identified key areas to pursue: collecting, disposing of weeds; educating, publicizing and engaging abutters and pond users. Margo and Karen F. will develop a questionnaire as a basis for person-person dialogues with abutters and pond users. Nomi will create a spreadsheet to help organize this information. Part of the education will include how the pond sediment and runoff from storm water drains, supplies nutrients to help the weeds grow.
Mansion Beach Restoration
Karen has done a walkthrough of the beach and will need to deal with the Town of Wayland for permits and guidance. She has an idea about creating gardens that include native and non-invasive species AND other types of gardens, like pollinator gardens. She asked the board to think about people in our community that have created these types of gardens.
